A Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) system delivers waves as electrical impulses to key Brain structures, to modulate neural activity, to restore the balance of circuits that are disrupted, overcoming abnormal activity in Brain Deep regions. Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) surgery can be used in many patients with chronic neurological disorders. Now the most common usage is in Parkinson's disease but recently it is widely used in many other neurological diseases such as dystonia, obsessive compulsive disorder, tic and Tourette’s syndrome.Recently more fields of DBS surgery has been added for other chronic neurological or psychological disorders such as cluster headache, anxiety, depression, dementia and Alzheimer’s disease, epilepsy, vegetative state and also schizophrenia.Although the experience about these new fields is limited, these topics are so attractive and motivate many neuro-research centers to focus on these new fields.The author will explain the details of indications in all fields of DBS surgery and also expectations and limitations. Also more details will be discussed about clinical details of t he patients who need DBS surgery.

Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) is a functional neurosurgery procedure being performed by inserting two specific pace-making probes into specific Deep Brain nuclei and sending electrical Stimulations in order to suppress or stimulate different nerve groups in the nuclei. Currently DBS has been approved by Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for treatment of essential tremor, Parkinson’s disease, dystonia and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). DBS has also been used in research studies to treat chronic pain and has been used to treat various affective disorders, including major depression; neither of these applications of DBS have yet been FDA-approved. While DBS has proven helpful for some patients, there is potential for serious complications and side effects.
